Each of our birds have been rescued by us over the past year, here are their stories so far...
ROSIE: Rosie is a Rose Breasted (Galah) Cockatoo, age 4. She was hand reared & sold for £1400. When we went to collect Rosie it was obvious she was very unwell. We got her home, I took her from the cage & examined her. I was devasted to see the state she was in. Her legs were splayed, she was bone thin,covered in pressure sores & lumps & bumps.It was late at night & I sat up with her on my lap until the following morning when we went to the vet.By the time the vet saw her she was vomiting. The vet said she wouldnt live through the day she was severly malnurished( she had been raised on a poor seed diet)The vet couldn't take blood or really do anything as she was too far gone. We brought her home & I started to nurse her. I gave her water with a baby medicine syringe every hour & a weaning formula every 4 hours the smae way. This went on for a week, I kept her warm & clean in a small box.

ReplyDeleteI'm amazed how brave is this little bird... I have a 9months old galah now for about a month and I almost know nothing about this bird. Sometimes he is all lovely and we play for hours, he is sitting on my shoulder while i'm cleaning or cooking, he dances and jumps, he is easy to animate for dancing and jumping sometimes works on command too, but some other times he seems scared and I don't know of what, he is biting me very hard and doesn't like to get touched (which I respect, I don't touch if he doesnt want).
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid to miss anything i should do with him (training) or give him (food/toys) - and I know no one to talk about this, none of my friends has a bird.
My pinky is such a lovely bird and I never want to give her away, she is a part of our family and I hope I can always treat her the best.
I would be really thankful for a email/skype to contact just to ask some questions and have someone to talk to about my little pinky.
